Blacklisting in the 1940s and 1950s

In the 1940s and 1950s, the United States was in the grips of a “red scare.” Many prominent individuals suspected of sympathizing with liberal or humanitarian causes were branded a communist threat, and even accused of espionage.

Hollywood was a major focus of the accusation, and after 10 actors refused to testify in front of the House Committee on Un-American activities, the blacklist was created.

Hundreds of actors, actresses, directors, screenwriters and other entertainment professionals were barred from working. The Hollywood blacklist was the practice of denying employment to screenwriter, actors, directors and etc. When the first subpoenas were issued the Hollywood impulse was to fight back.

People who changed the World

The person I chose to research was Tyler Perry. I feel like he changed the world because he overcame so many things as a teen and became of the richest persons alive. He went from sleep in his car; homeless, to having many hit plays, movies and sitcoms. As a child, he was beaten and abused by his father.

Tyler is involved in many charities in Atlanta that help troubled teens that are being abused. He also once donated $1 million dollars to the NAACP. He has also supported “Elton John AIDS Foundation.” Perry has involved himself in charities all over the world. He helps the children all over Atlanta.

As a young adult, Perry didn’t realize he wanted to be “famous” until one day while watching the Oprah Winfrey show, he heard her say that writing downs one’s experience could cathartic. Soon after that he started writing. Using his past childhood as stories in his movies and plays.

Coldest Place in America (1)

This week my teacher introduced my class to a new story “To Build a Fire.”

Which is a story about a man who was hiking with no partner just him and his dog. In the story, he runs into many different obstacles. He then notices that it is really cold. Like below freezing cold and his hands and feet start to go from numb to a stinging pain.

Also in the story, it mentioned how after the man has been through so many obstacles he realizes that a man earlier before he went on his trip that an old man told him to never travel alone in the cold. The man didn’t remember that until his hands and feet were completely frozen. His dog’s paws were so frozen that he started licking them. Which wasn’t really smart because his tongue could’ve froze.

I researched what was the coldest place in America and the answer was Fairbanks, Alaska. The weather there is about 22 degrees below zero. When that is, ice fog occurs when tiny particles are suspended in the air. People do live there but I know it is very hard because of how cold it is.
